"In late 1989 Virginia responded to a request from the Three Reeds trio (Jennifer Porcas, Gillian Carter and Elisabeth Jacoby) for music by women composers. Rehearsals for Celtic Dreams (oboe, cor anglais and bassoon given its first performance at the BMIC in London in November 1994) which she composed for them, provided the foundation for a continued musical association and friendship between Jennifer and Virginia.

Jennifer, who enjoyed some years as a fulltime orchestral oboe-player (D’Oyly Carte, Teheran Opera, Stadttheater Trier, Kurorchester Bad Orb) now mostly performs in the more intimate settings of chamber music, alongside her work as a repairer of woodwind instruments. She currently plays in duos with Anna Roberts, pianist and Helena de Rijke, harpist. Jennifer also enjoys solo performance and considered herself privileged to have been entrusted with the first performances and recording of How the song grows, Virginia’s wonderfully lyrical and evocative music for solo oboe d’amore."

Skydancer Programme

Music in open form- a flute – a guitar weaving a spider's web of abstract lines connecting with simple chant. Dance – embryonic- evolving, delivering a long melodic arc of sound on flute, A point of clarity, an intuition, which the dancer reveals. A high pitched chant liberates our energies to reflect on the trills, cadenzas, silences, tremolandi, drumming of the music, translucent yet simple serious yet playful.. fluttering through the sky like the clouds over a full moon, where for one moment we thought we saw her – the skydancer.

Virginia Scott 1995.

Written with funds from the Arts Coucil of Wales for Lynne Plowmann /Flute and Sally Hillier/ Guitar and first performed at the Norwegian Church Cardiff Bay on Friday the 13th October, 1995.

Review: Terma for 2 Pianos

"Campaigners against piano abuse were unlikely to have been bowled over by Virginia Scott's Terma. In expressionistic music, long movements are often doomed to failure. However, Scott has succeeded in supporting a large scale structure through a combination of thematic, harmonic and developmental security."
